- KYNO
KYNO is a
News/Talk radio station broadcasting at 1300 kHz inFresno, California ,United States of America .tation history
KYNO from 1957 and throughout the 1960's and 1970's, was a Top-40 station, and was the #1 "Hooper" rated station in Fresno under the ownership of Eugene Chenault. KYNO was the testing ground for the "
Boss Radio " format that would be adopted at such stations as KHJ,Los Angeles ; KFRC,San Francisco andCKLW ,Windsor, Ontario . Program directorBill Drake and disc jockeys such as KO Bailey, Les Turpin, Ed Mitchell, and Gary Mack went against the cross town rivalKMAK ("K-Make"), its program director Ron Jacobs and DJsRobert W. Morgan (who would become legendary in Los Angeles), Jim Price, Glenn Adams, Jay Stevens, Frank Terry & Tom Maule. This radio war is now known as the "Battle Of Fresno."Eventually, KYNO stopped playing music and for a time was an all-
sports radio station that carried theFresno Grizzlies of thePacific Coast League .From 1999 until August 30, 2008, the station was Spanish-language and known as Radio Guadalupe.
As of August 28, 2008, the station was purchased by
John Ostlund for $1.6 million and plans were made to bring it back as a competitivetalk radio station. Nationally syndicated talk show hosts, such asBill O'Reilly (commentator) ,Dennis Miller ,Dr. Laura ,Don Imus andLarry King Live will be featured daily on the KYNO broadcast line-up. One or two local hosts will also soon be featured in the daytime lineup. This has led to some alleged questionable practices in the
Fresno radio market by competitorKMJ (AM) , which recently purchased major internet domain names, such as [http://www.newstalk1300kyno.com Newstalk1300kyno.com] , which now redirects traffic to the KMJ 580AM website. These practices, however, are common competitive tactics between rival radio stations in the Internet era and no action should be pending.KYNO officially launched on September 1, 2008 and featured classic radio advertisements from the 1960s and 1970s during its first day on-air. On Tuesday, September 2, 2008, the station debuted it's English language News/Talk format, beginning with Don Imus at 3am.
