Patsy Keever (born
December 20 ,1947 ) is an Americaneducator and Democraticpolitician . In 2004 she ran unsuccessfully for theUnited States House of Representatives inNorth Carolina 's 11th Congressional district, losing the hard-fought election by a margin of 55% – 45% to incumbent RepublicanCharles H. Taylor . Prior to this election she served three consecutive terms on theBuncombe County commission and taught inpublic schools for over 25 years.Born in
Charlotte ,North Carolina , Keever received herB.A. degree fromDuke University and herMasters in Education fromWestern North Carolina University .Keever has been politically active in
Asheville andBuncombe County for over 30 years. In addition to her 12 years as a countycommissioner , she serves on the boards of a number of community organizations and is a past president of the Asheville/BuncombeLeague of Women Voters . Keever's campaign received strong support from Democrats in the 11th District. She also received significant support from national organizations representing educators, abortion rights supporters, police and firemen, and environmentalists.
