O'Donovan played for a number of clubs as a youth, before joining his hometown club Cork City in early 2005 from Coventry City. O'Donovan had played mainly as a wide-right attacking midfielder after joining Cork, but was soon moved up front. Roy left the club in August 2007 as the top goalscorer in the Eircom League.cite news

accessdate=2007-06-24] In May 2007, O'Donovan expressed his surprise and disappointment at not being part of the Republic of Ireland squad for international matches against Ecuador and Bolivia, a squad in which his Cork City teammate Joe Gamble was included.

On August 7, 2007, O'Donovan joined Sunderland for an Eircom League record transfer fee of €500,000. The fee can increase to €1 million depending on appearances for club and country. O'Donovan is understood to have signed a 3 year contract, worth €8,000 per week. cite news

accessdate=2007-07-08] Roy made his Premiership debut for Sunderland versus Birmingham City on August 15 2007 when he came on as a substitute in the 69th minute. He made his first start of the season in the 3-1 defeat to West Ham United. He got his first goal for Sunderland in a Pre-Season friendly against Sporting Lisbon on the 20th July 2008.

Sunderland striker Roy O'Donovan was a loan target for both Leeds United and Dundee United for the coming 2008/09 season and on the 8th August 2008 signed a one-year loan deal at Dundee United.Fact|date=June 2008
