The Human Voice

"The Human Voice" is a 1932 stage play written by Jean Cocteau. It is a monologue that takes place in Paris, where a middle-aged woman is on a phone call with her lover of the last five years. He is to marry another woman the next day, which causes her to be desperate. The monologue traces the mental breakdown of the woman.

There was an opera adaptation of this play by Francis Poulenc, which was produced in 1959. There was also a 1966 television adaptation of this play on the television series ABC Stage 67 and starring Ingrid Bergman, who also recorded a record album of the play. There was also a 1998 BBC Radio production by Robin Rimbaud.
