WORLDwrite

WORLDwrite is an education charity formed in 1991, and based in Hackney, London.

What they do

WORLDwrite are registered with the Charity Commission as follows:

"To advance the education of young people between the ages of 13 and 25 years inclusive, particularly by way of international exchanges and tours, in subjects such as history, geography, politics, international affairs, culture and languages and in inter-personal relationships and pratctical life skills so as to assist such young persons in growing to full maturity as individuals and as members of society." WORLDwrite have a history of campaigning for global equality. They accomplish this through a combination of film making and exchange programmes in countries such as Ghana, India, Uganda and Brazil.

WORLDwrite is funded through a combination of fundraising events and small grants from local organisations.

Damned By Debt Relief

WORLDwrite are most notable at the current time for their Damned By Debt Relief tour, which is currently touring schools, colleges and universities in the UK. Filmed in Ghana by a volunteer film crew, a 28 minute documentary critically examining the impact of debt relief is shown, with a speaker flown in from Ghana to answer questions. It will be running from 18th October to 2nd December 2006. The tour has been arranged in the run up to the 50th anniversary of Ghana’s independence from colonial rule.

Critics

Critics allege that WORLDwrite provides a political platform for the British libertarian LM group, lambasting environmentalism and sustainable development while eulogising genetically modified crops. The director, Ceri Dingle, is a veteran of the Revolutionary Communist Party and its offshoot, Living Marxism. Other key positions in the organisation are also dominated by LM group members and sympathisers: Kirk Leech, another LM partisan, is an assistant director.
