Inigo Campioni (
14 November 1878 –24 May 1944 ) was an Admiral in the Italian Royal Navy ("Regia Marina ") duringWorld War II .Campioni was born in
Viareggio ,Tuscany .Campioni led several naval groups during the war and reached the grade of
Vice-Admiral ("Ammiraglio di Squadra"). Later he was appointed as governor of the Italian Dodecanese Islands. On8 September 1943 , Campioni was on the island ofRhodes during the armistice between Italy and the Allies.After several uncertainties that favoured the German occupation, he refused to collaborate with the fascist government of the
Italian Social Republic . Brought to Italy in the zone administrated by the puppet state "Repubblica sociale Itliana", he was condemned to death for High Treason by a Military Tribunal of the "Repubblica sociale" inParma and shot in May of 1944.He later received a Gold Medal for Valour in Battle.
