Trophic hormone

Trophic hormone

Trophic hormones [(trof'ik, trō'fik) Greek: τροφή, "trophē" = nourishment] are hormones that are secreted to promote the survival of various cells.

Trophic hormones include the neurotrophins, NGF and BDNF, which promote cell survival via signal transduction through TrkA and TrkB receptors, respectively. This forms a part of the "Neurotrophin Theory".

Trophic hormones are not to be confused with tropic hormones which have the primary function of regulating the production and secretion of other hormones in another endocrine gland.
