International Economic History Association

The International Economic History Association (IEHA) serves as an umbrella organization, which has been established in 1960 and unites economic historians from all over the world. Beside national economic history associations, it welcomes as member organizations also societies, which specialize in a specific discipline within economic history. The global character of the IEHA is reflected in its list of members – in 2006, it includes organizations from almost 40 countries in Africa, America, Asia, Europe and Oceania. The main objectives of the IEHA are to bundle and coordinate worldwide research in economic history, to provide a forum to discuss new findings and methods and to thereby promote communication among scholars in economic history and related fields. As one of the most important medium to achieve these goals, the IEHA holds a World Economic Congress every three or four years.

The IEHA is coordinated by three bodies. The General Assembly is the supreme authority of the Association. It consists of one representative from each member organization of the Association and an alternate. The General Assembly meets at least once every three or four years on the occasion of the world congress. The Executive Committee is responsible for executing the decisions of the General Assembly and for ensuring the realization of the aims of the Association. It meets once every year to discuss all issues relating to the IEHA. The committee currently consists of nineteen members, elected by the General Assembly for a three or four-year term, depending on the number of years between congresses. The Local Organizing Committee is responsible for the entire organization of the world congress, with the exception of the scientific program which is drafted by the Executive Committee. The vice-president of the IEHA chairs the organizing committee.
