John C. Tkazyik is the
mayor of Poughkeepsie,New York .Biography
Tkazyik was born on
May 5 ,1979 and is the only child of Andrew and Frances Filoia Tkazyik.Career
Tkazyik was first elected to the Poughkeepsie City Council in 2001 and re-elected again in 2003 and 2005.
A graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Tkazyik attained an Associates in Arts degree from Dutchess Community College, and a
B.A. degree in Psychology/ Special Education fromMarist College . He presently works as a substitute teacher in Dutchess County, while assisting in his family owned restaurant, [http://www.gotoandysplace.com Andy's Place] , in the City of Poughkeepsie.In 2001 he become the youngest councilman to be elected in the City of Poughkeepsie at the age of twenty-one. During his first term in office, John worked to re-establish Neighborhood Block Associations in his ward. John was appointed by then-Mayor Colette Lafuente to serve as liaison and board secretary to the Poughkeepsie Housing Authority as well as a board member to the Dutchess County Economic Development Zone, upon which he serves today.
John was re-elected in 2003 to a second term on the City Council and served as Vice Chairman of that body. During the 2003 term John assisted the Marist College Campus/ Community Coalition, a group that deals with issues concerning college students living off campus in residential neighborhoods.
He is very active in both church and community organizations throughout Poughkeepsie. He is a congregant at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and served as president of the parish pastoral council. John also participates in other clubs and organizations including the Italian Center, Poughkeepsie Elks Lodge, Knights of Columbus, Dutchess Community College Alumni Association and as a member of both the Catharine Street Center and Hudson River Housing Boards of Directors.
He announced on
February 1 ,2007 that he would be running for Mayor of the City of Poughkeepsie.Tkazyik took the oath of office
January 2 ,2008 at the Grand with numerous supporters in attendance.External links
