11 October 1903 -25 April 1945 ) was ajazz pianist , an accomplishedstride pianist .Weatherford was born in
Pocahontas, Virginia and was raised in neighboringBluefield, West Virginia . From 1915 through 1920 he lived inNew Orleans, Louisiana , where he learned to play jazzpiano . He then moved toChicago, Illinois , where he worked with such bands as that ofErskine Tate through the 1920s and with such jazz notables asLouis Armstrong andJohnny Dodds and impressed the youngEarl Hines .Weatherford then traveled, first to
Amsterdam , then aroundAsia playing professionally. In the early 1930s he led a band at the Taj Mahal Hotel inBombay (nowMumbai ),India He joinedCricket Smith 's band inJakarta ,Indonesia . Weatherford took over leadership of Smith's band inCeylon (nowSri Lanka ) in 1937.In the early 1940s he led a band in
Calcutta , where he maderadio broadcasts for theU. S. Armed Forces Radio Service . Performers with Weatherford's band includedBridget Althea Moe ,Jimmy Witherspoon ,Roy Butler andGery Scott .Teddy Weatherford died ofcholera in Calcutta, aged 41.
