Chand Bagh School Muridke

Chand Bagh School Muridke

The Chand Bagh School is one of the largest and most expensive schools in Pakistan. It is a fully residential boarding school located around 40 km (25 miles) from the city of Lahore on the Muridke-Sheikhupura road. The school is the first project of the Chand Bagh Foundation (incorporating the Doon School Society of Pakistan). It is a private all boys educational institution run on a non-profit basis.

The school is regarded as one of the premier preparatory schools in Pakistan and offers students sports and extracurricular activities; regularly competing against similar schools across Pakistan and touring its sister school Doon School in India. The founding father Lt. Gen Ghulam Jilani Khan and 10 other trustees, all graduates of Doon School (Dehra Doon, India) set up the school. Their efforts culminated in the establishment of the first project of the Chand Bagh Foundation, the Chand Bagh School in 1998, opening its doors to 60 students.

In 2006, work on the buildings and infrastructure was completed and in 2007 the school reached a strength of 600 students. The school has sports grounds, fruit farms, lawns, a swimming pool, a landscaped lake and an open air theatre. History

The genesis of the Chand Bagh School goes back to 1935-36 when the Doon School in Dehra Doon, India opened its doors and a number of boys of what was then British India joined this school. Dehra Doon itself was well situated with the Sivalik Hills in the south, Himalayas in the north and in the east and the Jumna and the Ganges valley on the west. At the time, the Headmaster was an Englishman named Arthur Edward Foot who came from a talented family that had socialistic leanings. As the founder Head Master, he laid the basis of what the Doon school is today. It is believed that Arthur Foot probably modelled Dera Doon on public schools in England at the time as he himself had been associated with Winchester. An important ingredient in developing the intellect, character and physique of the boys was the concept of "socially useful productive labour". Up till that time, this concept had never been used in any school in British India.

In 1985 on the 50th anniversary of the school, a number of Old Boys in Pakistan of the Doon better known as DOSCOS were invited and subsequently went over to India to participate in the 50th anniversary celebrations. Later, in a discussion between the returning Old Boys and the late Gen. Jilani (a Doon school Old Boy who was Governor of Punjab at the time), a consensus was reached that they would try and set-up a similar institution in Pakistan. Although this was not the first attempt, it was the one that was eventually successful.
