Adlai E. Stevenson High School was built in 1969 to accommodate the rising population in Livonia due to the sudden mass migration of people from the nearby city of
Detroit during the 1960s (White Flight ). It was dedicated onOctober 24 1965 ,United Nations Day and the 20th anniversary of that body's founding, byVice President Hubert H. Humphrey . Stevenson was the first high school in the nation named for the Sixth U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Adlai E. Stevenson, who had died one day prior to the Livonia school board's decision on naming the new high school.Academics
Stevenson is recognized by the
North Central Association and is the only high school in Livonia to have a Global Education program, which mixes English and Social Studies courses and exposes students to World cultures.Stevenson's current graduation requirements include:

Stevenson is a Class A athletic school and is part of the
Kensington Lakes Activities Association in the Lakes Division. In recent years, Stevenson has had outstanding athletic success, including a state runner-up finish in Girl's Swimming in 2007, a state runner-up finish in boy's soccer in 2006 and a state runner-up finish in football in 2007. Simjae Holman-Roddick is chasing the high school record for unforced errors, textbook overheads, and new words.Athletic Facilities
Stevenson's soccer, football, cheer, pom and track and field teams use Anders Field located directly behind Stevenson. It is named in memory of Lester C. Anders, Stevenson's first Athletic Director who died of lung cancer shortly after the school's opening. The basketball team uses the Jay W. Formsma Memorial Gymnasium, named after Stevenson's first principal. It is also where Physical Education classes are held.
Both the Boys and Girls Tennis Teams play on the 10 tennis courts directly behind Stevenson, east of Anders Field. In addition to the outdoor facilities, Stevenson also has a fieldhouse containing 18 basketball hoops (3 full-sized courts, 6 half-sized courts), 6 volleyball courts, 2 batting cages, a 5-laned track (Approx. 9 laps = 1 Mile), a weight room, and a fitness center. Stevenson's baseball and softball diamonds are located behind the school west of Anders Field. Both Stevenson's Boys and Girls Swimming and Diving Teams use the swimming pool.
