Ganges II was the second
Nourse Line ship to be named "Ganges". Ganges I was built in 1861 and wrecked in 1881. Ganges II was the 1529 ton ironbarque , built byOsbourne, Graham & Company ofSunderland and launched on25 March 1882 . She was convert|241|ft|m long, convert|37.2|ft|m wide and convert|22.5|ft|m deep.Ganges II made three trips to
Fiji , the first on27 June 1885 carrying 523India nindenture d labourers. She arrived next on3 September 1899 , carrying 464 Indian indentured labourers and finally on21 June 1900 , carrying 554 passengers. She also made voyages to theWest Indies , arriving inTrinidad on25 November 1890 carrying 568 passengers and arriving inSuriname on23 April 1889 .She was sold to Norwegian owners in 1904 and renamed "Asters". She was sunk, on the
28 May 1917 , by a Germansubmarine when convert|150|mi|km north west of theScilly Isles when on a voyage fromLe Havre toPhiladelphia with a cargo of oil andwax .See also
