May 7 ,1893 –June 9 ,1962 ) was a Republican politician who represented Wisconsin's 4th congressional district in Congress from 1923 to 1933 and again from 1939 to 1941.Born in
Milwaukee , Schafer fought in theFirst World War inFrance , serving for twenty-two months. In 1921, he was elected to theWisconsin State Assembly before running for Congress a year later. After his defeat byThaddeus Wasielewski , in 1940, he unsuccessfully contested the election results. Schafer also ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for the Senate in 1957 to fill the vacancy left by the death of Joseph McCarthy.Schafer retired to private life and died in Pewaukee in 1962.
