Esat Erbili
Esat Erbili was a "Shaykh" of the
Naqshbandi order ofSufis and brought a branch of the Naqshbandiyyah with him to Istanbul at the beginning of the First World War.Biography
Esat Erbili was born in Erbil in Iraq in the year 1847 (1264) where he studied under Taha al-Hariri. After the death of Shaykh al-Hariri in 1875 he visited Istanbul for a short time, later returning in 1910 to established a Dergah (Tekke) in ÜsküdarYilmaz, H. Kamil:"Altin Silsile". Meclis-i Meşâyıh
In 1914, Esat Erbili was appointed the head of the "Meclis-i Meşâyıh" (The Council of Islamic Teachers) in Istanbul and was so until its closure in 1915
As part of the
Atatürk's Reforms , the tekke in Istanbul was closed and eventually Esat Erbili was arrested in 1930 and he died shortly afterwards in a Military Hospital in Izmir.Writings
