John Stuttard

Sir John Boothman Stuttard was Lord Mayor of the City of London in 2006/2007.

Stuttard was educated at Shrewsbury School and Churchill College, Cambridge, before joining Cooper Brothers in 1967, qualifying as a chartered accountant in 1970 and becoming a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales. He was a partner in PricewaterhouseCoopers from 1975 to 2005 and has been an adviser with the firm since then. From 1981, he spent two years on secondment to the British Cabinet Office advising the Central Policy Review Staff on nationalized industries and their privatisation. From 1983 to 1994 he was chairman of the firm's Scandinavian Group. He spent five years in China from 1994 to 1999 as the company's executive chairman.

His charitable and other business activities and appointments have included: Teacher with Voluntary Service Overseas at SOAS College, Brunei (1966-67); Honorary Treasurer, New Horizon Youth Centre in London’s West End (1972-77); Member, Cambridge University Appointments Board, advising the Cambridge University Careers Service (1977-1981); Director (1980-2005), Totteridge Manor Association, an environmental charity, Treasurer (1980-1994) and Chairman (2002-05); Director, China-Britain Business Council (2000-06); Member, VSO Fund Raising Advisory Board (2000-05); Member, Advisory Committee of the East Asia Institute of the Faculty of Oriental Studies at Cambridge University (2001-); Director (2001-), Finnish-British Chamber of Commerce, Chairman (2002-06); Justice of the Peace (2001-); City of London: Alderman for Lime Street (2001-), Sheriff (2005-06), Lord Mayor (2006-07); Court Member and Fellow, Bridewell Royal Hospital (2002-); Governor, King Edward VI School, Witley (2002-); “Sponsoring Alderman”, Guild of Educators (2002-); Trustee, the Mayor of London’s Disaster Relief Appeal (2002-); Trustee, Charities Aid Foundation (2003-2006) and Chairman, Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee (2003-2006); Trustee, City of London Archaeological Trust (2003-); Adviser, St Paul’s Cathedral Foundation (2005-); Trustee, Morden College, Greenwich, an old-people’s home (2005-); Vice-President, Totteridge Residents Association (2006-); Trustee, the Lord Mayor’s 800th Anniversary Appeal, to help young people travel (2005-); Council Member, Voluntary Service Overseas (2006-); Chancellor, City University (2006-7).

He was honoured by the Government of Finland and is a Commander of the Order of the Lion of Finland (2004), as well as a Knight of Justice of the Order of St John (2006) and a Companion of the League of Mercy (2007).

He is an Honorary Fellow of the Foreign Policy Association, New York (2000), Honorary Doctor of Letters, City University (2006) and an Honorary Fellow, Securities & Investment Institute (2007). He is also the author of the book "The New Silk Road – Secrets of Business Success in China Today" published by John Wiley.

He is a member of the Worshipful Company of Glaziers, the Worshipful Company of Chartered Accountants, Master of the Worshipful Company of Barrelmakers and the Worshipful Company of Plumbers. He was knighted in the 2008 New Year Honours.
