In 1999 the coordination of the festival was taken over by the School of Creative Communication and in 2002 the festival was not held as it was handed over to a non-profit committee funded by the Australian Capital Territory Government.

In 2006, an unrelated Melbourne based Australian International Film Festival was launched.
