Coaching career
Before serving as governor, Schoeppel was the seventh head
college football coach for the Fort Hays State University Tigers located inHays, Kansas and he held that position for the 1929 season. His career coaching record at Fort Hays was 2 wins, 5 losses, and 0 ties. As of completion of the 2007 season, this ranks him 20th at Fort Hays in total wins and 19th at Fort Hays in winning percentage. Although he was only filling in as coach for one year while head coach
William D. Weidein was on sabbatical, Schoeppel was not without football talent. He played football while attending theUniversity of Nebraska and made “honorable mention” on one of Walter Camp’s first All-America football teams.
