Leone Strozzi (
October 15 ,1515 –June 28 ,1554 ) was an Italiancondottiero belonging to the famousStrozzi family ofFlorence .Biography
He was the son of
Filippo Strozzi the Younger andClarice de' Medici , and brother to Piero, Roberto andLorenzo Strozzi .After his father's defeat in the
Battle of Montemurlo , Strozzi fled with his brothers toFrance , at the court ofCatherine de' Medici . Later he fought againstCosimo I de' Medici atSiena , but was again defeated.In 1530, Strozzi became Knight of the
Order of Malta , for which he was Prior inCapua . In 1536, he was named commander of the galleys of the Order, a position he held again in 1552. In 1544, he was ambassador for the Order atConstantinople . Later, Strozzi was alsoadmira l of theFrench Navy , distinguishing himself in numerous campaigns againstSpain andEngland .Strozzi died in the siege of
Scarlino , inTuscany , during the unsuccessful defence ofRepublic of Siena against Florence and theHoly Roman Empire , shot by anarquebus ball.ee also
