The Prison was removed from the high-security estate in 1985 and became a local prison holding inmates remanded and sentenced by courts in the area.

In 2002 a major expansion was completed which added four new wings, a new gymnasium, a new health care centre and a multi-faith centre. This increased the capacity to approximately 1030 inmates.
