Augustus Witschief Bennet (
October 7 ,1897 –June 5 ,1983 ) was aUnited States Representative from New York. Born in New York City, he was a son of U.S. RepresentativeWilliam Stiles Bennet and attended the public schools in New York City andWashington, D.C. . He graduated fromAmherst College in 1918 and during theFirst World War served in theUnited States Naval Reserve Flying Corps with the rating of chiefquartermaster fromJune 8 ,1918 toJanuary 19 ,1919 . He graduated from theColumbia University Law School at New York City in 1921, was admitted to the bar the same year, and commenced practice in Newburgh. He wasUnited States referee in bankruptcy from 1923 to 1944, and was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-ninth Congress, holding office fromJanuary 3 ,1945 toJanuary 3 ,1947 . He was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1946, resumed the practice of law, and resided inLaguna Hills, California until his death inConcord, Massachusetts in 1983. He was cremated, and the ashes interred at Cedar Hills Mausoleum in Newburgh.References
