Janet Dempsey Steiger

Janet Dempsey Steiger

Janet Steiger (June 10, 1939 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin - April 3, 2004 in Fort Myers, Florida) was an American politician. She graduated from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. On August 10,1963, she married William A. Steiger, who was elected to the United States House of Representatives. They had one son, William R. Steiger, who is presently Director of the Office of Global Health Affairs at the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, where he has been the subject of controversy for his role in the politicization of science.

A member of the Republican Party, she was chairman of the Postal Rate Commission from 1981 to 1989 and chairman of the Federal Trade Commission from August 11, 1989 to April 11, 1995.
