Hanging Rock, Co. Fermanagh

Hanging Rock, Co. Fermanagh

The Hanging Rock is a large, dartry limestone cliff with an obtuse angle. It is located beside the village of Florencecourt in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It is part of the Cuilcagh mountain complex.

The Hanging Rock Nature Reserve is located at the base of the cliff itself. It consists of damp ash woodland, an endangered woodland system within Ireland and the United Kingdom.

An interesting piece of folklore concerning the Hanging Rock is based around a large boulder which fell from the cliff at some time in the past. This rock fell on the original road from Florencecourt to Blacklion and it is said locally that when this rock fell it landed on top of a wandering Salt merchant who was travelling along the road at the time. It is said that whenever the rock was found the next day that there was a ring of salt surrounding it. From this time on this was known as the Salt Man's Stone.
