Kawkawa Lake is a lake located 2.5 km (1 mile) east past the City of Hope in British Columbia Canada. It’s situated between the Coast and Cascade Mountain Ranges and makes for a day-trippers paradise with many outdoor activities and adventures for all to experience.

Kawkawa Lake has many species of fish but is best known for its large Kokanee. Anglers will love fishing early in the spring, as the Kokanee (Land Lock Salmon) can reach up to 3+ lbs.

Kawkawa Provincial Park is on the Lake and has toilets, swimming beach, a grassy play area, park benches and picnic tables, a small dock with a concrete boat launch.

Camp nearby at the Kawkawa Lake Resort and Campground where boats are also welcome. Water sports include; skiing, wake boarding, tubing and jet skiing. There is no Life Guard on Duty so supervision is required. No Boat Rentals are available but visitors can rent a Dune Buggy for Touring in the mountains.

Other activities include hiking through the world famous Othello Tunnels or Hells Gate Air Tram located only 15 minutes from the City of Hope.

tóːlō history

The name for the lake is from the Halq'eméylem word "Q'áwq'ewem", meaning "home of loons" after two loons that once lived here: "q'ewq'weelacha" and "q'ewq'ewelot". There is also a story about a young man who jumped from the rock bluffs on the north side of the lake, and plunged all the way to the bottom and landed on a pit house. The dim light from the pit house was later seen, deep below the water, by a woman passing by. When a dam was later built, it damaged the salmon run up the "Kw'ikw'iya:la" (Coquihalla River).
