The Gettysburg National Tower was a 307 foot observation tower that stood overlooking the battlefield of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Many of the battlefield's 2 million annual visitors paid a fee to get aerial views of the battlefield. Controversial from its opening in 1974, the structure was demolished in 2000.

History

The tower was built in 1974 on private land adjacent to the Gettysburg National Military Park by real-estate developer Thomas R. Ottenstein.cite web |url=http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9B00E5DA153CF936A3575BC0A9669C8B63&sec=&spon=

] The tower was opposed by many, including the National Park Service, historical preservationists, and locals. A law passed in 1990 claimed the lands as part of the park and in June 2000 a federal judge gave park officials permission to seize the tower with $3 million given as compensation to the owners. The Gettysburg National Tower was demolished with explosives by the National Park Service on July 3, 2000, the 137th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.
