Bapsfontein

Bapsfontein

Bapsfontein is a small town near Johannesburg in South Africa.

It was famous for the dancing that happened in the old Bapsfontein hotel but recent years has seen a degeneration of the surrounding area.

During first half of 2004 sinkholes appeared, as a result of too much groundwater being pumped out by vegetable farmers in the area.

Bapsfontein is also used in expressions by South Africans as a simile to "middle of nowhere". For example, "He's got an office in Bapsfontein" would imply that it's completely out of the way.

Near Bapsfontein is Klipkop Conservancy which works to protect buck, other game and the endangered Bankenveld with the help of the owners and volunteers from around the world.
