The Liberty Project was a comic book created by writer Kurt Busiek, creator of Astro City and Thunderbolts and artist James W. Fry.

Publication history

"The Liberty Project" was published by Eclipse Comics in 1987. It ran to eight issues until 1988 before its cancellation and Busiek was hired by Marvel Comics. In July 2003, The About Comics reprint old issues into a book called "The Liberty Project".

The series told the story of a team of four former supervillains into a group of superheroes that set up by the U.S. government who offered them an early parole for protecting their country and others against teenage monsters, autocratic space aliens, larcenous old friends and lovers, and made enough wrecked police cars to fill a summer blockbuster.

Membership

*Burnout (Beatrice Keogh)- an angry, angst-filled youngster who can generate flames with a mere thought.
*Cimarron (Rosalita Vasquez) - a feisty, short-tempered Texas hell-raiser. She has super strength and limited invulnerability.
*Crackshot (Lee Alexander Clayton) - a marksman who is trying to go straight. He has the extraordinary ability to hit anything with a weapon. Crackshot is also the mechanic of the team.
*Savage (Johnny Savage) - Johnny could transform into a huge gray skinned hulking brute with razor sharp teeth and Ram's horns. He joins the Project in issue #3.
*Slick (Nicholas Walcek) - His name reflects both his slippery powers and his slippery personality. He is the reluctant leader, with the power to render surfaces with a very low coefficient of friction (ie. make very slippery).
