Laurent Pariente (born on
May 4 ,1962 inOran ,Algeria ) is a Frenchsculptor Presentation
Laurent Pariente designs his constructions on the scale of the place they occupy and the people who move around in them: networks of straight walls, sometimes with doors set in them, sometimes with a ceiling, proliferate within and divide up the space, leading the visitor in a free yet confusing stroll.
As one wanders through them, their overall geometrical structure blurs as the body becomes lost in its imperfect memory of distances and the path behind. Chalk and pure damp clay or clay mixed with soap envelop the walls with a vibrant and impalpable skin: the precision and sharpness of the joins of the walls and walls with the floors, and the direct or channelled natural light, sometimes reflected, sometimes absorbed, conjure away the surface from the eye, which is lost in the experience of an intangible space without points of reference.
Laurent Pariente has transposed and developed these principles of construction, space and light in an industrial building made of concrete, “Le Panetier”, which he executed in Saint-Martin-Boulogne in the North of France in 1996.
In 2000, in the Galerie Cent8 in Paris, a solid wall unfolds in zigzags in a series of sharp angles, guiding, attracting and repelling visitors, before bringing them back towards the entrance along the other side of the wall.
This spatial writing situated somewhere between fullness and emptiness, looming up and absence, is also displayed in dry-point engravings on metal plates of zinc, copper or brass, where grooves of light hollowed out in the material describe the energy of the gesture, the trace of a body and its movements in space, and in self-portraits in which the face emerges through a tangle of lines.
