Liberty Tax Service is a United States-based company specializing in the preparation of tax returns for individuals and small businesses. The company began in Canada in 1972 and began selling Canadian franchises in 1973. John Hewitt purchased the Canadian company in 1997, changed its name to Liberty Tax and began selling franchises in the United States [http://www.entrepreneur.com/franchises/libertytaxservice/282901-0.html] .

Liberty receives various media attention due to its practice of using store-front wavers dressed up in such costumes as the Statue of Liberty and Uncle Sam.

As of 2007, Liberty is the fastest-growing international tax preparation firm in the world. Their franchise network is comprised of over 2,900 offices in the United States and Canada. Most individual offices are independently-owned franchises, and the company was ranked by Entrepreneur Magazine as one of the 10 most successful franchises in the country. In addition,
