Jean-Olivier Chénier (
December 9 ,1806 –December 14 ,1837 ) was a physician inLower Canada (present-dayQuebec ). Born in Lachine (or maybeMontreal ). Trapped with his men in a church by the British troops who set flames to the building, he was killed while attempting to escape through a windows. He died to shouts of "Remember Weir!", a reference toGeorge Weir , a British spy executed by the Patriotes. Montreal is named for him, as is the Jean-Olivier-Chénier Section of theSaint-Jean-Baptiste Society of Montreal. TheChénier Cell of theFront de libération du Québec (FLQ), responsible for the assassination ofPierre Laporte , was also named for him.References
