Sergei Karaganov

Sergei Alexandrovich Karaganov ( _ru. Сергей Александрович Караганов, born September 12 1952) is a Russian political scientist who heads the Council for Foreign and Defense Policy, an independent and influential analytical institution whose members include a number of Russia's political, academic and economic elite. Karaganov is a close associate of Yevgeny Primakov, and has been Presidential Advisor to both Boris Yeltsin and Vladimir Putin. [http://www.eng.yabloko.ru/Publ/2002/papers/moscow-times-020402.html]

Karaganov has been a member of the Trilateral Commission since 1998, and served on the International Advisory Board of the Council on Foreign Relations from 1995 until 2005. He has also been Deputy Director of the Institute of Europe at the USSR (now Russian) Academy of Sciences since 1989. [http://eng.karaganov.ru/bio/]

Karaganov is the only intellectual from the former Soviet Union listed in the 2005 Global Intellectuals Poll, and only one of four, with Pavol Demeš, Václav Havel and Slavoj Žižek, from Eastern Europe.
