The Pocahontas Stakes is a Grade III race held every year at
Louisville, Kentucky 'sChurchill Downs fall meet. Open only to two-year-oldThoroughbred fillies, it's set at a distance of onemile (eightfurlong s) on the dirt, and offers a purse of $100,000.Run in honor, perhaps, of both
Pocahontas , the Indian maiden, as well as Pocahontas, the daughter of Glencoe. Pocahontas (1837-1870) was one ofEngland ’s greatest "blue hen" mares, producing, in particular, three sons who influenced the breed enormously:Stockwell , Rataplan, and King Tom.The Pocahontas will be in its 38th running in 2008.
