Gus Macdonald, Baron Macdonald of Tradeston

Angus John "Gus" Macdonald, Lord Macdonald of Tradeston, CBE, PC (born 20 August 1940 in Larkhall, Scotland), is a British Labour politician.

He was educated at Allan Glen's School, Glasgow. After careers as an engineer in the shipbuilding industry and in the media as a journalist on The Scotsman and as the editor of the Granada TV current affairs programme World in Action. He returned to Scotland in 1986 to become Director of Programmes for Scottish Television becoming Managing Director in 1990. He became Non-Executive Chairman of Scottish Media Group plc at the end of 1997, [cite web|url=http://www.scotland.gov.uk/News/Releases/1998/08/21dc12c2-c4bc-485f-9185-b3f676e83c9f|title=Scottish government biographical notes|accessdate=2008-05-31] and chair of Taylor and Francis plc. He was elevated to the House of Lords as Baron Macdonald of Tradeston, in the City of Glasgow on 2 October 1998.

He served in Tony Blair's government as:
*Minister for Business and Industry in the Scottish Office (1998–99)
*Minister for Transport in the Department for Environment, Transport and the Regions, in attendance at cabinet (1999–2001)
*Minister for the Cabinet Office and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (2001–03)

He has been a member of the Select Committee on Economic Affairs, House of Lords since 2004 and is also Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Humanist Group and a member of the Fabian Society.

Lord Macdonald was installed as Chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University in October 2007, replacing the late Magnus Magnusson.
