Flatscan

Flatscan

Flatscan is a pejorative used by certain mutants in Marvel Comics to describe humans. It is used primarily by mutant-supremacists such as the Brotherhood of Mutants and the Acolytes, who believe that mutants ("Homo Superior") are the next stage of human evolution, and that existing Homo sapiens are "obsolete".

The term is likely a reference to the fact that humans do not appear on scanners calibrated for mutants (such as Cerebro or Cerebra). Fact|date=February 2007 It was first used by members of the Acolytes in "X-Men" vol. 2, #1.

A corresponding derogatory term for mutants, often used by humans in the fictional country of Genosha, is "genejoke".

The derivative term "halfscan" is used in the "Age of Apocalypse" storyline, to imply that a mutant's powers are so weak that they barely qualify as a mutant.
