Winthrop Welles Ketchum (
June 29 ,1820 –December 6 ,1879 ) was a Republican member of theU.S. House of Representatives fromPennsylvania .Winthrop W. Ketchum was born in
Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania . He pursued classical studies, and served as an instructor inWyoming Seminary inKingston, Pennsylvania , from 1844 to 1847 and inGirard College inPhiladelphia in 1848 and 1849. He studied law, was admitted to the bar January 8, 1850, and practiced. He served asprothonotary ofLuzerne County, Pennsylvania , from 1855 to 1857. He served as a member of thePennsylvania State House of Representatives in 1858. He served in thePennsylvania State Senate from 1859 to 1861. He was a delegate to theRepublican National Convention s in 1860 and 1864. He was an unsuccessful candidate for election in 1864. He served as solicitor of theUnited States Court of Claims from 1864 to 1866.Ketchum was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fourth Congress and served until his resignation in 1876. He became judge of the
United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania and served until his death inPittsburgh, Pennsylvania , in 1879. Interment in Hollenback Cemetery in Wilkes-Barre.ources
