Wordfast is a comprehensive computer-assisted translation tool, made up of a set of macros that run in Microsoft Word, version 97 or higher. It is commercial software, but can be used unregistered for any length of time. Unregistered installations are limited to translation memories of 500 translation units, but there are no other limitations.

Wordfast is intended for professional translators. Some of its features include translation memory with fuzzy matching, a range of glossary functions, context and reference searching, the ability to handle tagged formats, and the ability to translate documents from the entire Microsoft Office suite.

History

Wordfast was first written early in 1999. Version 3 existed by September 2000. Up to the end of 2002, Wordfast was free with free registration. Version 3.35x was the last free version. Version 4.22t22 was the last fourth version, published in June 2004. The current version is version 5.50.

upported source document formats

Wordfast can translate the following formats: any format that Microsoft Word can read, including text files, Word documents, RTF (rich text), tagged RTF and MS Word documents (including HTML). Wordfast can also translate Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint files.

It does not offer direct support for OpenDocument formats because the current versions of MS Word do not have import filters for OpenDocument files.

Wordfast's own translation memory format is a simple tab-delimited text file, accompanied by an index created by Wordfast itself. The format is supported by the Translate Toolkit [ [http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/toolkit/wordfast Wordfast TM] , notes on conformance of the Translate Toolkit's Wordfast TM support. Currently [http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/toolkit/po2wordfast po2wordfast] is available to covert Gettext PO files into Wordfast TMs.] allowing external programs to support and process Wordfast TMs. Wordfast can also import and export TMX files for memory exchange with other translation memory programs.

Wordfast's glossary format is a simple tab-delimited text file.

A comprehensive user manual for Wordfast can be downloaded from the Wordfast web site. Training modules for trainers are also available free of charge.

Related software

Since Wordfast is basically a set of macros running within MS Word, any number of macro-based tools can be used in conjunction with it.
