Hugh Owen

Hugh Owen

Sir Hugh Owen (January 14, 1804–November 20, 1881) was a significant Welsh educator.

Hugh Owen was a Methodist philanthropist; he was one of the original promoters of the University College of Wales at Aberystwyth. He is buried at Abney Park Cemetery in Stoke Newington, London.

The university library at Aberystwyth is named after Hugh Owen, as is Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen, a secondary school in Caernarfon ('ysgol' is the Welsh word for school). The Welsh phrase is often written as "Ysgol Syr Huw Owen".
