fictional character onThe CW Television Network 's "Supernatural" portrayed bySamantha Ferris . She was introduced in Season Two.Biography
Ellen is the widow of hunter William Anthony Harvelle and the mother of
Jo Harvelle . She knew John Winchester when he was still alive, and four months before his death she left a voice message for him offering help. The two had not spoken in some time due John's association with her husband's death.Ellen runs
Harvelle’s Roadhouse , a saloon frequented by hunters. When Sam andDean Winchester arrive they find the place abandoned, except for a man who appears to have passed out on the pool table - Ash. Wary of strangers, Ellen holds Sam at gunpoint while Jo subdues Dean. Upon realizing that John is their father, Ellen tells the brothers that she thought she might have been able to help John with The Demon. Ellen offers them a room in the back where they could stay, but Dean declines the offer. In the episode "Bloodlust," Sam asks Ellen if she had ever heard of a hunter named Gordon Walker. Ellen tells Sam that he is a good hunter but not to work with him. Later, in "Simon Said", when Ellen asks Sam and Dean to tell her more about the coming "war," Sam tells Ellen about The Demon and the children he has pursued.
In the episode "No Exit," it is revealed that her husband's death was the result of a mistake made by John Winchester while they were working together on a hunt.
In "Hunted," Sam goes to see Ellen at the roadhouse. She admits to Sam that her husband's death wasn't John's fault, and she forgave him a long time ago, but that John may have never forgiven himself. She also informs Sam that Jo has gone hunting by herself. Sam apologizes for this, but Ellen doesn't blame the brothers. Ellen later breaks a promise to Sam and tells Dean where he has gone, saying afterwards "You can't protect your loved ones forever."
The Roadhouse was destroyed in "
All Hell Breaks Loose, Part 1 ", and her whereabouts were unknown throughout the episode. It is later revealed that Ellen had left the Roadhouse to run a few errands, leaving Ash behind in it.Ellen returns in "
All Hell Breaks Loose, Part 2 ", showing up atSinger Salvage Yard . Bobby not completely trusting Ellen, makes her drink holy water. After she drinks it with no adverse affects, Bobby confirms that it is truly the real Ellen. She tells them how she survived the fire by accident because she went out to buy pretzels. Before Ash was killed, he told Ellen to get something out of the safe in the basement of the Roadhouse. She shows them a map with marks surrounding Wyoming which is really a giant Devil's Trap. They all go to the cemetery in the middle of the Devil's Trap where they corner Jake, hoping to stop him from opening the gates. However, Jake reveals a new found power to control Ellen. He makes her point her gun at her own head so that he can use her as a way to keep everyone from shooting him. After Jake becomes distracted, Bobby and Dean help Ellen by forcing her hand up, thus saving her. Jake then faces Sam, who shoots him multiple times without any guilt or regret. Ellen and others look on at Sam, surprised at his lack of remorse. When Sam and Dean are found by the Demon, Ellen and Bobby are left to try and close the Gate to Hell. After succeeding in closing the Gate, Ellen and Bobby turn to face John's ghost, who looks on at the boys before assumingly ascending to Heaven, causing his spirit to rest in peace. Ellen, along with Bobby, then inform the Winchesters that many demons have gotten out of the Gate, thrusting them into a war against the forces of evil.According to Sera Gamble, one of the writers for the show, Ellen was meant to return for the third season finale.
