Wrasse Records was started in 1998 by Ian and Jo Ashbridge. Both had been involved in the music industry prior to them starting up their own company. Its offices are based in the UK, but it distributes its CDs all around the world.
The company specializes in
world music (with signed acts such asRachid Taha ,Ismael Lo ,Souad Massi ,Angélique Kidjo ,Pink Martini , andSeu Jorge ), as well ascountry music , where in addition to signing acts, they license material from overseas record labels. Recent examples includeReba McEntire , whose "#1's" album was licensed fromMCA Nashville to be condensed to a single disc UK-exclusive greatest hits album, entitled, "Reba McEntire: At Her Very Best" and her 2007 "" album, which was released in the UK through Hump Head Records, the country-specific division of Wrasse. Other country acts licensed to Hump Head includeTrisha Yearwood , whose MCA Nashville greatest hits album was released in the UK by the company;Josh Turner ;Holly Williams ; andJulie Roberts .In 2005,
