Ela (woreda)

Ela is one of the 77 woredas in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples' Region of Ethiopia. Part of the Semien Omo Zone, Ela is bordered on the south by the Omo River which separates it from Melokoza, on the west by the Keficho Shekicho Zone, on the north by the Gojeb River which separates it from the Oromia Zone, and on the east by Isara Tocha; the Denchya River defines the southern part of the boundary with the Keficho Shekicho Zone. Towns in Ela include Ameya and Chida.

This woreda covers part of the homeland of the Dawro people.

Based on figures published by the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 74,828, of whom 38,700 were males and 36,128 were females; 5,050 or 6.75% of its population are urban dwellers, which is less than the Zone average of 8.5%. With an estimated area of 2,253.76 square kilometers, Ela has an estimated population density of 33.2 people per square kilometer, which is less than the Zone average of 156.5.
