Ela is one of the 77
woreda s in theSouthern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples' Region ofEthiopia . Part of theSemien Omo Zone , Ela is bordered on the south by theOmo River which separates it fromMelokoza , on the west by theKeficho Shekicho Zone , on the north by theGojeb River which separates it from theOromia Zone , and on the east byIsara Tocha ; theDenchya River defines the southern part of the boundary with the Keficho Shekicho Zone. Towns in Ela includeAmeya and Chida.This woreda covers part of the homeland of the
Dawro people .Based on figures published by the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 74,828, of whom 38,700 were males and 36,128 were females; 5,050 or 6.75% of its population are urban dwellers, which is less than the Zone average of 8.5%. With an estimated area of 2,253.76 square kilometers, Ela has an estimated population density of 33.2 people per square kilometer, which is less than the Zone average of 156.5.
