Jorge "Joey" Corpus (born c. 1958) is a
violin teacher living inNew York City .Born in the
Philippines , Corpus was badly injured in a car accident, which also took the life of his mother, at the age of eleven. It took many years and a number of surgeries for him to recover, though he did not regain the use of his legs and now uses awheelchair .He began his study of the violin at the age of 14 with his father, an amateur
jazz musician. Less than two years later he was invited to study withDorothy DeLay at theJuilliard School on a full scholarship byEdgar Schenkman , who was then the conductor of the school'sorchestra . Though his health was not yet good enough for him to leave the country, he continued his study of the violin, basically teaching himself.He emigrated to the United States of America in 1982 and settled
Philadelphia where he studied withJascha Brodsky at theNew School of Music .Numbered among his students are
Lara St. John ,Louise Owen ,Wen Qian , andKatherine Gowers .Joey is reputed to be a master magician.
