Joey Corpus

Jorge "Joey" Corpus (born c. 1958) is a violin teacher living in New York City.

Born in the Philippines, Corpus was badly injured in a car accident, which also took the life of his mother, at the age of eleven. It took many years and a number of surgeries for him to recover, though he did not regain the use of his legs and now uses a wheelchair.

He began his study of the violin at the age of 14 with his father, an amateur jazz musician. Less than two years later he was invited to study with Dorothy DeLay at the Juilliard School on a full scholarship by Edgar Schenkman, who was then the conductor of the school's orchestra. Though his health was not yet good enough for him to leave the country, he continued his study of the violin, basically teaching himself.

He emigrated to the United States of America in 1982 and settled Philadelphia where he studied with Jascha Brodsky at the New School of Music.

Numbered among his students are Lara St. John, Louise Owen, Wen Qian, and Katherine Gowers.

Joey is reputed to be a master magician.
