[cite web |url=http://blues.about.com/cs/venuesusnort1/index_2.htm |publisher=About.com |title=Venues: US] Founded in 1960 by Lena Spencer, it features acoustic concerts and cultural events showcasing folk music, traditional music, and singer-songwriters of a wide range. Since Spencer's death in 1989, Caffè Lena has been a not-for-profit organization.

It has featured performers such as Bob Dylan, Utah Phillips, Arlo Guthrie, Dave Van Ronk, Nancy Griffith, Tom Winslow, Thomasina Winslow, Rosalie Sorrels, Ani Difranco, Mississippi John Hurt, Emmylou Harris, and many others. It was at Caffè Lena where Don McLean performed the song American Pie for the first time.
