Spontaneous argument

Spontaneous Argumentation or SPAR is a competitive event held by several groups of the National Forensic League. It is also a great method for practicing your speech making skills.

Introduction to Spar

In a Spar argument, you argue one-on-one about a topic that varies from "Purple is the best color", "Gay Marriage" and "Violent Video Game Bans".

Basic Outline

In a Spar round you are given a list of topics, a coin is then tossed and the winner gets to choose the topic, while the loser gets to choose Aff (Affirmative or for the topic) or Neg (Negative or against the topic). Then what? The Aff gets one minute to think up a three minute speech, try to use up as much time as you can without it being to repetitive, so now the Aff has given his constructive speech, then the Neg has up to one minute to prepare his, the time is the same, and the goal is the same, convince your judge that you are the better speaker and have a more convincing argument. After both speakers have given their speeches they both stand up, no prep time, and ask each other question in a "Cross-Fire" which differs from a Cross-examination in that both ask questions. Then, without any prep time, Aff gives a one minute rebuttal, Neg gives a two minute rebuttal, then the Aff finishes up with a one minute rebuttal.
