- Hotel Maison De Ville
Hotel Maison de Ville and the Audubon Cottages is a hotel located in the
French Quarter ofNew Orleans, Louisiana , north of Jackson Square. It is a two-storied dwelling which was built byJean Baptiste Lilie Sarpy in 1800.History
Hotel Maison de Ville was constructed after the disastrous fire in 1788, which destroyed much of New Orleans.
The former carriage house, adjacent to the courtyard, is now a two-story suite. Four former slave quarters are located across the courtyard. They were built fifty years before the main building and are now guest cottages. These cottages, along with the Ursuline Convent, are believed to be the oldest buildings in New Orleans, though research has been hampered by the loss of historical documents.
They are now guest accommodations. In the 19th and early 20th century, the cottages were also used as "garconnières" or bachelor quarters. The Créoles often provided separate buildings where their grown sons lived until marriage, giving them privacy for adult lives.
The playwright
Tennessee Williams was a frequent guest at the hotel. His favorite room was named after him in his honor.External links
