Lamont Peterson

Lamont Peterson (born January 24, 1984 in Washington, DC) is a boxer in the Light Welterweight division.

Peterson and his brother Anthony Peterson are regularly featured on ESPN boxing telecasts, and their story has been frequently discussed on the show. The Petersons were left without parents at an early age, with their father in prison [http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=2863982] and their monther suffering personal issues. The brothers were reportedly homeless on the streets of Washington, DC for several years [http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=4561&more=1] . While homeless at age 10, they were noticed by Barry Hunter, a boxing coach. Over time Hunter developed their boxing skills while mentoring them, and both brothers morphed into amateur boxing stars.

Amateur career

Peterson was the 2001 National Golden Gloves Lightweight Champion.He became 141 lbs US champion in 2003. He holds wins over Rock Allen 2003 who beat him twice 2004 in the Olympic box-offs, Mike Alvarado, and Andre Dirrell, as well as 2003 amateur world champion Willy Blain (in 2003).His amateur record was 148-20.

Professional career

Peterson turned pro in 2004 and has won all 25 of his professional fights, including 12 by way of KO. Peterson and his brother Anthony have become virtual house fighters on ESPN's fight cards, and thus their careers have been propelled into the spotlight. Although most of Peterson's wins have come against limited opposition, he may currently be positioning himself for a shot at a major contender. He is scheduled to fight prospect Antonio Mesquita in January.
