Barry Clifford is an underwater archaeological explorer best known for discovering the remains of the wrecked ship "Whydah" in 1984 after a 15-year search.

The "Whydah" was the flagship of the pirate Black Sam and was wrecked in a storm off Cape Cod in 1717 with only two of the 146 men crew surviving. Among those killed were Black Sam himself and the juvenile pirate John King. Clifford's discovery of the "Whydah" the only confirmed discovery of a pirate ship in modern times.

A 2002–03 action-adventure television series entitled "Adventure Inc." was "Inspired by the real life exploits of explorer Barry Clifford." Clifford is credited as a consultant for that show.

On January 7, 2008, Clifford was featured extensively in the 2-hour documentary [http://natgeochannel.co.uk/explore/pirates Pirate Treasure Hunters] on the UK's National Geographic Channel about the ongoing excavation of the wreck of the "Whydah".
