- Alan Whiteside
Alan Walter Whiteside (born
March 18 ,1956 ) is anAIDS researcher and author. He was born inKenya and grew up inSwaziland where he attendedWaterford Kamhlaba United World College . In1980 , he received an MA in Development Economics at theUniversity of East Anglia . In 2003 he was awarded a Doctorate of Economics (D Econ) from the University of Natal in Durban.From
2003 to2006 he served on theUnited Nations Commission on HIV/AIDS and Governance in Africa .He is Professor of Economics and Director of the Health Economics and HIV/AIDS Research Division at the
University of KwaZulu-Natal . He is a member of the Governing Council of theInternational AIDS Society and a Governor atWaterford Kamhlaba . He is also a member of the Board of the Young Heroes orphan support initiative inSwaziland . His energies are also put into working with HEARD, a group of 40 researchers, research assistants and administrative staff who focus on the health issues and theHIV/AIDS pandemic.He has written extensively mainly on
AIDS . Key books include "AIDS in the Twenty-First Century", co-authored with ProfessorTony Barnett (second edition 2006) and the 2008Oxford University Press 'HIV/AIDS A Very Short Introduction'.List of his recent books
