Emmalina (born 1988) is the handle of a YouTube video blogger. Her videos were very popular and received media attention prior to her quitting the site in 2006 following a hacking incident. Her subscription base remained large throughout her hiatus, and has grown since her return. Nineteen-year-old Emmalina lives in Tasmania, Australia.On her youtube homepage she introduces herself as an "Australian chick studying an Arts/Law double degree majoring in Criminology." and goes on to describe herself as a "Kooky attention whore." She then goes on to say "I'm just your average chick with no particular claims to fame, but I'm cute in a psychotic sort of way." Emmalina is also active on other social networking sites such as Stickam, Myspace and Livejournal. She has made a claim to fame in her own right throughout her videos.

Her videos

Emmalina, at the time, was an information technology TAFE student from Tasmania and is currently studying a combined Bachelor of arts/laws majoring in criminology at UTas. While she had claimed to prefer LiveJournal for her social networking, her video blog entries attracted over 880,000 hits each. A particular video posted in response to people making negative comments about her videos attracted 320,000 hits to her video blog, putting her in Youtube's Most Subscribed list after only three months on the site, eventually reaching more than 4 million views. When active, she spent about 20 minutes a week on her videos, and about the same time editing them. They were edited with Windows XP's video editing tools and filmed on a high-quality webcam. Emmalina kept viewers updated on many aspects of her life including her studies, interests, family, friends and her boyfriend Luke who was featured in some of her posts. She also discussed many light-hearted topics including fashion, clothes, music and updated viewers with what she'd been up to. Many of the videos included her dancing whilst rotating her hips, giving viewers lessons in yoga and her showing her pet guinea pigs.

Whilst Emmalina was hugely popular and gained hundreds of compliments on everything ranging from her attitude to her style sense, she also received a lot of criticism due to her video blogs. Many peoples claimed her dancing was too intimate and that she flaunted herself through her videos. Some people also showed general hatred towards her for no particular reason. Emmalina had said in prior interviews that she kept her full name and address private to protect her identity, but had also received many threats, lewd comments, and "cruel spoofs," which ultimately led up to her leaving from YouTube.

Leaving YouTube

On August 9, 2006 Emmalina removed all of her videos and profile information from YouTube, setting them as private. She explained her departure at YouTubeTalk.com, stating that her computer was hacked into and her personal information was stolen. "Someone somehow got hold of recent pictures and videos of my boyfriend and I, as well as incredibly private files. ...so the individual who e-mailed them to me, flaunting them, would either have required physical access to my computer, or a knowledge of exactly what they were looking for and a backdoor vulnerability in my system".
