- Lowther Stakes
The Lowther Stakes is a Group 2 flat horse race in the
United Kingdom open to two-year-oldthoroughbred fillies. It is run over a distance of 6furlong s (1,207 metres) atYork Racecourse , and it takes place annually during theEbor Festival meeting in August.It was first run at York in 1946 and was named in honour of
Hugh Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale . A previous event known as the Lowther Stakes had been run at Newmarket in the 19th century. This earlier version was contested over 1½ miles.The 2008 running was transferred to the July Course at Newmarket, having been cancelled at York due to a waterlogged track.
