Berehet is one of the 105
woreda s in theAmhara Region ofEthiopia . Part of the Semien Shewa Zone, Berehet is bordered on the south by theGermama River which separates it fromMenjarna Shenkora , on the west byHagere Mariamna Kesem , on the northeast byAngolalla Terana Asagirt , on the north by Ankober, and on the east by theAfar Region . The major town in Berehet isMetiteh Bila .Based on figures published by the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 41,966, of whom 20,647 were males and 21,319 were females; 2,308 or 5.50% of its population are urban dwellers, which is less than the Zone average of 11.8%. With an estimated area of 902.35 square kilometers, Berehet has an estimated population density of 46.5 people per square kilometer, which is less than the Zone average of 134.37. Berehet is the location of the
Battle of Bereket , fought19 November , 1855] . In this battle, the lastShewa n nobles to resist Emperor Tewodros II were defeated by his general Ras Ingida, and seeing that further defiance was futile they surrendered the young heir to the Shewan throne, Menelik.
